I was a little apprehensive going into THE DESCENT 2. I love the original so much, one of my favorite films of the last 10 years and I was hoping they wouldn't take the easy way out for this trip back to the caves and I'm happy to report that for the most part PART 2 works. It's a really fun ride and with the exceptions of a couple of really nit picky concerns it is on par with the original and in a few instances, where they have ratcheted up the gore, it kind of surpasses it a bit.
The nit picky concerns I speak of just have to do with the story. After finding SARAH half mad and covered in her friends blood the local sheriff decides that he, Sarah and a couple of cave rescue folks need to high tail it back into the caves to find the rest of Sarah's troop. He is convinced that
Sarah has slaughtered them and wants her along to lead them to their bodies. I just have a problem with that little tidbit of story line. Why would they take this completely traumatized badly wounded person right back into the caves, it just don't make sense. And then to do it rogue, without telling anyone, even less sense. But, I guess you gotta do whatever you gotta do to make the story work so off they go, back into the caves entering through an old mine shaft that leads them right back into the monster filled hell that is the caves.
Sarah remains calm and quiet for the most part but once back in the claustrophobic confines of the cave, where she watched those nasty hairless things eat most of her friends, she kinda freaks out. Ya think?
It's not long till Sarah has decided that hanging with this group is going to accomplish nothing more then get her ass killed so she seizes a moment of confusion and escapes. The whole group ends up separated and then of course the crawlers show up and in a series of really great gore scenes pick off our hapless would be rescuers.
Some major spoilers beyond this point!!
Once our annoying "they wouldn't listen to Sarah and did what they wanted anyway" contingent are in the crawlers tummy we get down to some serious business and the film actually takes a bit of a turn into a full fledged survival film. Sarah is reunited with one of the originals from the first film ( I'm not going to tell you who, but you can guess pretty easily) and the tension from the first film quickly returns. By the end of the film only 3 folks remain and only one makes it out of the cave. The last scene, at the opening that the crawlers have been using for access, is both heart pounding and heart breaking. A true edge of your seat moment and the surprise at the very end actually caught me off guard. I'm not sure I completely like where they went with it but it did surprise me, I've got to give them that.
When all is said and done THE DESCENT PART 2 is a tightly woven, blood filled shreikfest that not only supports the first film but in several ways elevates the franchise into classic territory.
I would hope that they would stop here, although I know they won't, especially if this DVD does well but I really hope they leave it at this. All the reasons for continuing the story have been dealt with. Please don't tell me we'll see THE DESCENT 3 - Crawlers take Manhattan or some other whacked out storyline although I fear a similar story is already being worked on. Oh well, I guess we'll deal with that if and when it happens.
For the immediate future though, pick up THE DESCENT PART 2, it's a dark, bloody, creepy good time that will have horror fans cheering and wussies pissing themselves.
THE DESCENT PART 2 hits shelves Tuesday April 27th.
