I really think that THE RELIC is an under appreciated classic.  Okay, maybe not a classic but at the very least an under appreciated creature feature.

Starring the rather odd combination of Penelope Anne Miller, Tom Sizemore, Linda Hunt and Richard Widmark THE RELIC tells the tale of an ancient jungle evil running amok in a Chicago area museum.   It's a very effective tale and the museum setting lends itself to many really creepy moments.  Really, think of it.  Is there anyplace creepier than a museum, I don't think so.

What ultimately sells the film though, at least for me, is the creature FX work of STAN WINSTON.  It's a really cool monster and the best reason to pop this one in the player.

The film really gets going when a ship pulling into Chicago Harbor with everyone on board dead.  Blood everywhere and a lot of heads missing parts of their brains.  Sizemore shows up and the lead cop in charge and starts attempting to put the pieces of the puzzle together.  The crates that were on the boat were heading to the Natural History Museum in Chicago and its there that they are opened and the real fun begins.

Some of that cargo gets loose in the hospital and starts eating all the folks.  Night cleaning people, security guards, etc.

There is a big grand opening being planned at the Museum, one where all the local big wigs are showing up and by the time that Sizemore and Co. figure out what is going on all the folks are at the opening and are basically a buffet for our monster friend.  Miller plays some kind of biologist who works at the Museum and along with Sizemore figures everything out and ultimately confronts our beastie.  Don't want to ruin the ending in case you haven't seen it.

I actually like the movie quite a bit.  I know a lot of folks don't but I find it to be a well paced, bloody creature feature and I would reccomend you give it a shot and now would be no better a time.  The blu-ray looks and sounds great and just adds to what was already a fun experience.

Here's the official synopsis for THE RELIC:

Plucky evolutionary biologist Dr. Margo Green (Penelope Ann Miller) joins forces with tough Chicago cop Lt. Vincent D'Agosta (Tom Sizemore) to unravel the mystery behind the horribly mangled corpses that keep popping up around her museum during an opening night gala. When they investigate further they find that there were mysterious deaths on the cargo ship that brought new exhibit pieces across the ocean. Sure enough, there's a monster to blame, sprung from a strange artifact of South American origin. Based on the bestseller by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child. The Blu-ray Disc is presented in 1080P High Definition Widescreen format and 5.1 DTS HD Master Audio.
