I really have to look at this film two different ways. As an entertaining story this film did nothing for me. As a mega impressive showing of how far the art of computer generated film making has come in the last decade this film is hands down the best film ever made.
Lets look at what I felt was so outstanding first. James Cameron is more then just a film maker, he's an event film maker. AVATAR is just the latest in what has been a streak of "event" films from this ground breaking director. AVATAR combines both live action and CGI into a perfectly seamless 3 hour event. I don't even want to hint that I have any clue as to how they did what they did but I do know that it looks absolutely unbelievable. Blu-ray is definitely the platform in which to view this film. Amazingly crisp and clear it is an utterly breath-taking visual treat.
AVATAR is also one of those "geek" films much like Star Wars or Star Trek those that have really "gotten in" to this film love the whole alternate universe, language aspect of the story. Cameron's story certainly opens itself to comparison, story wise, to those tales. A whole community has developed around this film and it's only just begun. Like the fore mentioned Star Wars films AVATAR is one of those films that 20 years from now you'll still have folks walking around dressed like the characters. Those that love it, love it a lot.
For me I found the story confusing, convoluted and well, rather dull. My wife watched it with me and she just LOOOVEED it. Yep, chick flick.
That don't make it bad, just not for me.
It's difficult to knock the film though. It is technically perfect on every level. I'll just leave it with the old stand by "not for everyone" tag line and be done with it. Is it possible for a film to be "too perfect" I know that sounds rather silly but if there is such a label then AVATAR achieves it.
A breath taking technical achievement wrapped around a very common tale of man screwing everything up AVATAR is sure to be the subject of conversation for years to come and Cameron has certainly pushed the envelope of film making once again and has also, once again change the playing field for any "event" films in the near future.
I got the Blu'Ray / DVD combo pack and it is just what it states to be. It's the Blu-Ray edition of the film on Disc 1 and the Standard DVD on Disc 2. Nothing more, nothing less. Kind of surprised at the complete lack of any special features at all. These discs are as bare bones as they come. I'm surprised they even put the cover art on the box, could have been just a brown cover with AVATAR written with crayon. Seriously though, NOTHING on the disc, c'mon.
Of course the multi-disc "special edition" or "director's cut" will be here by Christmas time. Why let us buy it once when we'll buy it twice.
No 3D to be found either. That really doesn't surprise me though. 3D home technology is just ramping up so I don't look for Cameron to let a 3D version come out till home theater technology catches up.
I would definitely advise you to pick this film up and absorb it as soon as possible, especially if you're a film geek, or a chick.
AVATAR is out now, it was one of those "special" Thursday releases that only the best of the best get.
