THE RIG is a pleasant little surprise. I'm not gonna lie to you, I wasn't really expecting much when a sat down to check out this latest flick from Anchor Bay but it had me hooked after about 10 minutes, always a good sign, and although a tad bit draggy at the two thirds mark overall THE RIG satisfies.
It's not anything new. A group of folks trapped on an oil rig by a storm find themselves systematically picked off one by one by a nasty little family of creatures that they inadvertently dug up while doing themselves some off shore drilling.
Predictably the first third of the film is all set up and character development but it's actually very well done and the films star William Forsythe really shines as the head of the oil rig. He plays it tough and gruff and it works.
SPOILERS LIE BEYOND THIS POINT SO STOP NOW IF THAT UPSETS YOU!!
A very low budget film, THE RIG kind of suffers a bit cause after the opening third Forsythe ceases to be in the film anymore and the film suffers for it. I'm assuming they could probably only afford William for a certain amount of days and kind of structured the story around that. It's not that the rest of the film is bad it's just that Forsythe is such a force when on screen you can't help but miss that fact that he's not there.
The creatures look decent enough and although cloaked in darkness the majority of the film when you finally do get a good look at them, it's not a disappointment. Director Peter Atencio does a formidable job of keeping it all together and manages to give the film a nice sense of tone and mood and with the one exception of getting a wee bit draggy towards the end keeps the pace and action coming at ya.
I actually found myself quite involved in THE RIG and although a bit predictable and cliched, the movie is actually quite.....fun.
I really wish we could have had more of Forsythe, I really think that would have ratcheted this one up into the "must see" category but as it stands I would have to say that if you can find this one, check it out.
Here's the official synopsis followed by the trailer:
As a hurricane rages outside, the small but experienced crew of an oil
drilling rig settles in to ride out the storm. Isolated on the rig,
their calm is short lived when a crew member goes missing and an
extensive search proves futile. Slowly, they discover that a deadly
creature is stalking the skeleton crew, eliminating them one by one.
Surrounded by nothing but raging ocean, their communication severed and
no way off the rig, the roughnecks try to survive the stormy night with
an unrelenting force of death hunting them down.
