On August 29th, Dark Sky Films will release a classic trio of tales that original aired on TV back in 1975; Trilogy of Terror. Directed by Dan Curtis and written by William F. Nolan and Richard Matheson (based on the works of Matheson and he did the screenplay for story three; Amelia) The cast includes, Karen Black, (Julie/Millicent/Therese Larimore/Amelia), Robert Burton (Chad Foster), John Karlen (Thomas Anmar), George Gaynes (Dr. Chester Ramsey), Jim Storm (Eddie Nells), Gregory Harrison (Arthur Moore) and Kathryn Reynolds (Anne Richards).

Julie:

Miss Aldridge (Black) is a somewhat dowdy, plain looking college professor that has become the target of student, Chad Foster (Burton), who decides to play games with Aldridge. Foster takes Aldridge to a Drive-In and proceeds to drug her drink. He then takes her to a motel and lays her out in various states of undress and takes several photographs of her and uses those to blackmail her into carrying on an affair with him. Chad gets a bit more than he bargained for when playing games with this teacher.....

Millicent and Therese:

Millicent and Therese (Black in a dual role) are sisters at opposite ends of the spectrum. Millicent is a spinster who is convinced that her sister, Therese, a much more worldly and outgoing woman, is a witch. Following the death of their father, Millicent chases off her sister's boyfriend, Thomas Anmar (Karlen), by telling him horrible stories about Therese having an affair with her own father and tells their own mother committed suicide, once the truth was known! Millicent fears for her own safety and decides the only way to save her own life is to fight the evil of Therese using the black magic she says her sister is part of.

Amelia:

Amelia (Black) is a young woman that purchases a Zuni fetish doll as a birthday gift for a boyfriend and unfortunately for Amelia, she has a very domineering mother and has to deal with a severe guilt trip for wanting to spend an evening with her boyfriend rather than her mother. Things go from bad to worse when the Zuni fetish doll she purchases loses the gold chain from around it's waist that legend says keeps the spirit of a real hunter from becoming angry and starting out on a serious hunt. Amelia is soon battling the doll for her very life and let's just say, that hunter has some pretty deadly ideas!

Trilogy of Terror is presented in it's original full screen ratio (1:33.1) and looks very good. Now, this made-for-TV has been previously released, but I've never seen that DVD, so I can't honestly make any comparisons between the two releases. Audio options include an English only track (Dolby Digital 2.0) with optional English subtitles. Bonus features include:

-Commentary Track With Actress Karen Black and Writer William F. Nolan

-Three Colors Black (Featurette)

-Richard Matheson: Terror Scribe (Featurette)

I'd have to say, for a made-for-TV film, this is a pretty good effort! The three stories making up this film are certainly enjoyable, but my favorite of the three as seems to be most viewers is, Amelia. For those who have never seen this film and read the brief description, you're probably sitting there thinking that a possessed doll just can't be all that creepy, but this doll has quite the attitude! He moves like lightning and is nasty as hell and those teeth of his, I just think this story is the strongest, but none are really weak. When I saw there was a commentary track with Black, I had to check it out, as she has always struck me as a little offbeat and she certainly proves it with her commentary......she comes across quite full of herself, but while anyone else chatting away like this would more likely than not, be a huge turnoff, I get a kick out of Black. At times, it's almost like she's sitting there rambling on to herself! I'd definitely recommend this as a rental to curious viewers and to those fans who missed out on the earlier DVD release, by all means, grab this release!
