The Addams Family/Addams Family Values (1993)
- Addams Family
trailer (windows media)
- Addams Family Values
trailer (windows media)

Plot Synopsis:  This double feature presents two feature-film versions of the classic 1960s television series The Addams Family: When long-lost Uncle Fester (Christopher Lloyd) reappears after 25 years in the Bermuda Triangle, Morticia (Anjelica Huston) and Gomez (Raul Julia) ecstatically begin plans for a celebration that will wake the dead. Meanwhile, an evil lawyer is plotting ways to get at the ghoulish family's fortunes--which are stashed somewhere within a secret vault inside the family mansion. Only the daughter, Wednesday (played by the brilliant and stunningly stoic Christina Ricci), and the detached servant, Thing, suspect that something rotten is afoot. But can they prove anything before the vault is found and the Addams family is plunged into poverty? The Addams Family (1991) is not only the cartoon and television family's film premiere but is also the directorial debut of talented cinematographer Barry Sonnenfeld. It has a winningly dark sense of humor that manages to be both lighthearted and macabre. In Addams Family Values (1993), Barry Sonnenfeld has performed the remarkable feat of making a sequel even more entertaining than its predecessor. The charmingly creepy Addams family (based on characters originally created by the morbid Charles Addams) have two new additions, mustachioed baby Pubert and sunny nanny Debbie Jellinsky. While Debbie (wonderfully played by Joan Cusack) charms the adults of the family, particularly Uncle Fester, the children discover that she is actually a serial killer called the Black Widow. The children are soon shipped off to summer camp as part of nanny dearest's diabolical plot. It's at Camp Chippewa that some of the funniest scenes occur, particularly one in which Wednesday tells genuinely terrifying ghost stories to the other campers and another that features both Addams children being sent the Harmony Hut as punishment for trying to escape. Sonnenfeld and production designer Ken Adams (no relation) make sure that each minute is a pleasure to look at by creating a feast of dark visions and macabre sight gags. Addams Family Values will be most enjoyed by those with a taste for flip gallows humor. ~ VideoUniverse.com

-
trailer (windows media)

Plot Synopsis:  Set in a barren, futuristic Tokyo of highways and wastelands, a rowdy group of punk bands and their fans gather to protest the construction of a nuclear power plant. Riot police and the factory owner's yakuza friends soon move in to break it up. However, the arrival of a pair of mysterious, metal-clad bikers and a revolt among the disgruntled construction crew makes for a situation that spirals dangerously out of control...  Directed by Sogo Ishii (Electric Dragon 80,000 V, Gojoe, Angel Dust), Burst City boasts an impressive lineup of early 80s Japanese punk bands, including The Stalin, Battle Rockers, The Roosters, and Inu. An eclectic mix of Mad Max-style imagery with yakuza elements, filtered through a punk sensibility, Burst City reveals the seeds of many of the developments in contemporary Japanese cinema and beyond. Brimming with incredible energy and first-rate rock 'n' roll, Burst City is a lost masterpiece of extreme cinema that has influenced everyone from Takashi Miike to Shinya Tsukamoto. ~ VideoUniverse.com

Danger After Dark Collection
- Suicide Club
trailer (windows media)
- Moon Child
trailer (windows media)
- 2LDK
trailer (quicktime)

Plot Synopsis:  This limited edition collector's box set contains three dark cult features from Japan.

Suicide Club:  After 54 schoolgirls simultaneously jump in front of a train at Shinjuku Station in Tokyo, the city is plagued with "suicide clubs"--groups of teens who get together in order to kill themselves. The police have little luck in deciphering the goings on, but they do keep finding a ribbon composed of bits of skin from all the previous suicides at the scene of each new death scene. They are also aided by a mysterious hacker who tallies the deaths on a bizarre website. But do the deaths have a connection to the all-girl pop group called Desert? This unusual Japanese film collects elements of the horror, satire, and crime genres for a one-of-a-kind cinematic brew.

Moon Child:  In the 21st century, a group of childhood friends navigate a violent criminal underworld in a fictional city in China. Sho, a member of a drug gang, develops a strong bond with his organization's newest member, Kei (Japanese pop star HYDE), a vampire. Over time, their love for the same woman drives a wedge between them. Director's Takahisa Zeze imbues his film with plenty of violence and gunplay to enhance the futuristic imagery.

2LDK:  Anyone who's ever had a difficult roommate will relate to this outrageous and violent Japanese comedy. Small town girl Kimi and her glamorous, big city roommate, Lana, share a Tokyo apartment (2 bedrooms, living room, dining room, and kitchen, hence the abbreviation in the title). They already have their little disagreements, but when it comes to light that they are competing for the same movie role and the same man, their fights escalate from arguments to all-out power-tool battles! Taking place entirely within the confines of the apartment, 2LDK is short, thrilling ride for fans of offbeat cinema. ~ Amazon.com

The Flesh and Blood Show (1974)

Plot Synopsis:  This sick little horror film from British gore/exploitation director Pete Walker finds a group of actors summoned by an anonymous producer to take part in a gruesome Grand Guignol play being staged at an isolated resort, only to find that their characters' elaborately staged theatrical deaths are designed to do them in for real. It is revealed that their unseen benefactor is a former stage performer, driven psychotic after catching another actor in bed with his wife, who now seeks symbolic retribution against all actors for their immoral behavior. Though not quite as sleazy as some of Walker's later work, this is still fairly gruesome stuff. The same theme gets vastly superior treatment in the following year's Theatre of Blood, featuring a tour-de-force performance from Vincent Price. ~ All Movie Guide

Plot Synopsis:  On the Franco-Austrian Frontier during WW I, an oriental priest, chaplain of a French colonial regiment, is condemned to life imprisonment because he possesses the power of turning men into zombies. As the priest,in his prison cell, is preparing to burn the parchment containing the location of the secret formula, Colonel Mazovia (Roy D'Arcy, the accented version of Theodore Lorch) kills the priest and takes the partially-burned parchment. Fade to after the war to an expedition of representatives from all the Allied countries (only those with colonial interests it appears) being sent to Cambodia to find and destroy forever the Secret of the Zombies. The group includes Colonel Mazovia (somewhat akin to sending the fox to guard the hen house) ; a student of dead languages, Armand Louque (Dean Jagger) ; Englishman Clifford Grayson (Robert Noland) ; and General Duval (George Cleveland) and his daughter Claire (Dorothy Stone.) Armand falls in love with Claire, who accepts his proposal of marriage in order to spite Clifford whom she really loves. Later, when Claire, following an accident, runs to Cliff for comfort, Armand breaks the engagement, leaving her free to marry Cliff. Further accidents, caused by Mazovia, results in the natives refusing to work and the expedition returns to Pnom Penh. Armand fins a clue which he had overlooked before and returns to Angkor against orders. After viewing an ancient ceremony at the temple, Armand follows one of the servants of the high priest out of the temple, through a swamp, to a bronze doorway. When the servant leaves, Armand goes through the door to a room paneled in bronze, with an idol holding a gong in one hand in the middle of the room. He accidently strikes the gong, and a panel in the wall opens revealing a small metal tablet. He translates the inscription and realizes that it is the secret for which they have all been looking. He alone now has the power to make zombies out of people, beginning with a practice run on his servant before taking up that little matter of the fickle Claire. Armand is not one to be trifled with. ~ Amazon.com
