This is just too cool.
While horror cinema was blasting ahead in theaters back in the 1930's, the radio was playing, and many programs featured suspenseful tales. Among them were classic series like The Inner Sanctum, Suspense, and The Witch's Tale. Many of these were a huge influence on the horror mags of the time, like Tales from the Crypt and Suspenstories.
A friend online passed this website on to me. The page, Old Time Radio at the Monster Club, contains classic broadcasts from way back in the day. In addition to obscure ones, there are a ton of Poe stories, adaptations of films, and even a Lovecraft tale. Many of the programs are narrated by the man himself, Vincent Price.
Most awesome of all, the page features the original Mercury Theater broadcast of The War of the Worlds, as performed by Orson Welles. This is the broadcast that frightened its listeners so much that the mayor of New York wanted to personally punch Welles in the face. You know when you've made something terrifying? When an elected official wants to punch you in the face.
So if you have some time in between your horror movie marathons and the inevitable viewing of Saw III, definitely check this out. You'll be glad you did.
