Freaks (1932) Review:
Freaks are such an old gem that, in a way, it makes me really sad to see this film falling into the forgotten pit when other cult movies such as Dracula keep receiving praises. To me, Freaks is simply the best horror movie that was made from before 1950.
First of all, it is a truly dramatic and really touching story. The bullying of that poor little guy really makes you feel sorry for him. Second, the set of extraordinary characters is unforgettable. The film features a bunch of circus “freaks” including some really disturbing ones such as the small headed persons, the torso-guy, the guy walking on his arms, etc… They all reveal themselves as surprisingly great actors and together perform as a remarkably well-organized troupe. Last but not least, Freaks is (or was for a long time) the only film of his kind. I do not think someone would dare to make such a movie nowadays, at least not featuring real people.
This film is pure entertainment, not only a film for cinema student and wannabe horror expert connoisseurs but a great moment of cinema. It will both scare and touch you. The final scene is crazy and will stick to your mind forever. Trust me, watch it if you haven’t yet, you won’t regret it.
