Family Secret (2015) Review:

Family Secret is a really low budget movie (14,000$) made by Geno MacGhee, who also made Scary Tales. The film starts as a pretty basic slasher, with the usual journalist investigating the murder as the main character, his comprehensive wife, the usual detective, etc. They are the average characters that you would find in most slashers.

Thereee are actually a lot more characters in that film, probably too many. Some of them are interesting, others, more secondary to the story, could have been spared. The white trash dad was pretty cool; with a clever choice of actor that makes the character quite intimidating. The main hero choice of an actor was however less convincing, with the actor looking too friendly for his bad-ass young reporter role. Too many characters also mean too many dialogues. The film is almost 2 hour, but the first hour feels like a marathon of new characters and new dialogues. One thing that really turned me off was the constant aggressive talk, which I found often unnecessary and somehow irritating.

So the story seems very basic slasher during the first half. But that’s exactly when the film managed to surprise me, the movie really picks up after 1 long hour to finally deliver a very interesting second half. The killings start to happens, and they are the greatest things of that movie, very gory and very graphic…I was actually astonished regarding the low budget of the movie. The bowling part where the granny killer is going berserk is easily my favorite moment! The granny killer is actually a pretty cool concept too!

The ending is really surprising and unexpected; I won’t give out any spoilers but it open a new perspective to the movie, add a bit more depth and made me appreciate the movie a lot more.

To conclude, this movie has some good and some bad, too long but with good skills and a cool ending. When compared with other high budget movies, it almost reaches the average rating, but not quite.
