Before we get too far into this, it should be known that, 3 Extremes II, isn't a sequel to the very popular, Three... Extremes. 3 Extremes II was actually filmed in 2002 under the original title; Saam gaang or Three and has been released as a part two of sorts to cash in on the popularity of Three...Extremes. 3 Extremes II offers the following three tales; Memories, directed by Kim Jee-Woon (Korea); The Wheel directed by Nonzee Nimibutr (Thailand) and Going Home, directed by Peter Ho-Sun Chan (Hong Kong).
Memories:A woman (Hye-su Kim) awakens on a nearly deserted street and can't seem to recall how or why she's on the street. The only thing she has is a phone number on a piece of paper and she attempts to use the number on several occasions, attempting to find out who may be at the other end of that number and if they can fill in the blanks of her world. Meanwhile, her husband (Bo-seok Jeong) is going through his own nightmarish existence as he knows his wife has left him, but he can't seem to recall why. As his nightmares become more unsettling, he discovers something in a duffel bag that may push him right over the edge. The Wheel:
Theatre performers inherit cursed puppets that inflict pain, cause fires and death and a young girl is possessed.Going Home:
When a young son goes missing, his desperate father begins searching and stumbles into the very bizarre world and held captive by a neighbor who is nursing the corpse of his wife, believing his wife will rise again in three days time. 3 Extremes II is presented in anamorphic widescreen (1.78:1) and overall, the video quality is decent. There is a fair amount of grain in some of the nighttime scenes in the second story, but overall, it looks pretty good as a whole. Audio options offered are Korean (Dolby Digital 5.1 and 2.0) with optional subtitles in English and Spanish. Bonus features include:-Trailers for: Three...Extremes, Audition, Ju-On, Premonition, Infection, Caved In: Prehistoric Terror, Satanic, See No Evil
3 Extremes II, is a bit of a letdown for me, personally. I thought, Three....Extremes was a wonderful collection of three very well done stories. 3 Extremes II can't possibly be called a copycat attempt, because as mentioned, this release was actually made before, Three....Extremes. The first story, Memories wasn't bad at all and the lack of much dialogue probably helped in the atmosphere department, there were a few scares and chills and I found the story to be entertaining if nothing else. The Wheel was my least favorite of the three stories and I'm not really sure why, other than the story seemed to be a bit bland and on the boring side. It probably could have been one of the stronger stories in the film just because puppets have a tendency to be a little frightening all by themselves. The third and final story in the disc; Going Home is probably my favorite because of the overall eeriness of the story and it plays out very well. I'm sure we've all lost someone very close and special to us and would give most anything to have them back with us, free of pain or disease, but seeing the lengths the husband goes to is far beyond anything this viewer could ever think of! I did a little research and found that like the film, Three.....Extremes and it's 'Dumplings' story, Going Home was also a full length feature edited down to be included in this collection of shorts. Unlike the disc for, Three....Extremes, the full length feature was not included with this disc. This disc appears to have been a rush job and so the only bonus features are trailers and that's a shame, because I'd have really enjoyed seeing the full length feature for, Going Home. Overall, this is a decent collection of stories and I did enjoy it, even if the marketing for the disc is a bit misleading. I almost think if this disc had been released for Region 1 first, Three....Extremes might not have been sought out as much as it appears to have been. Still, if you enjoy Asian horror, chances are you'll enjoy the three efforts housed on this disc. It's definitely worth a rental.
