Ah hell, I know I'm going to take a dump truck full of shit for this one but here we go.
I've just watched DAY OF THE DEAD 2008 and I liked it.
What, your head didn't explode? Good, just hear me out and try not to pass any judgment to soon. So how in the hell could I possibly like this flick you're asking right.
First off, you can't go into this thinking of this project as a remake. It is not. It has nothing to do with the classic Romero original in any way. Don't even think of the Romero version while you are watching this. If you do, you're done. This film has to be looked at as a stand alone zombie film and if you can manage that then I think you'll find out that it really isn't that bad of a little film.
The story does have a military storyline as we meet up with Sarah (Mena Suvari) an Army grunt who finds herself manning a roadblock outside of her small hometown. Seems that something is a foot at the local military base and the place has been locked down. No one comes, no one goes. As the film progresses we learn just exactly what is wrong and the effects of the accident. There are zombies in the film, kind of. The same way that the "things" in PLANET TERROR were "kinda" zombies. They are more like "infected" then zombies. Whatever the case, they are seriously fucked up and they are pretty vicious.
Don't get me wrong, there are some seriously bad moments in this film. A lot of them centering around the character of Salazar played by Nick Cannon. The dude really can't act and his lines are all comical even when there are not supposed to be. Every attempt is made to make him into the bad ass hero and it just don't work but it is still fun as hell watching him try. The phrase "so bad it's good" comes to mind.
Having said that I also feel that the folks behind the FX need to be applauded. I'm sure they had less then nothing in the way of money and the blood and guts look great. Really, they do. Some pretty creative stuff going on here and just like above it sure is fun to watch.
The film is directed by Steve Miner who horror fans should know as the man behind FRIDAY THE 13th, HOUSE and other "classics". I think he actually does a respectable job here. It's well shot and quickly paced. Not much time to catch your breath as the action moves quickly and the blood flows freely. Even a couple of pretty cool camera angles thrown in just to keep your attention. Some pretty huge editing problems as some scenes are just a mess and look like my dog edited them.
But hey, we're not going for an Academy Award here. This is some gore soaked fun and I think Miner and Co. have delivered.
This one was done by the folks at Taurus Entertainment who have pissed off loads of horror fans by buying up the rights to some of Romero's films and have been putting out some lets say, less then quality product.
This one seems like a small step in the right direction though and I at least have the guts to sit here and announce to the world that I liked this one.
Give it a chance, pick it up or rent it from Netflix and then turn your brain off and get ready for some fun.
DAY OF THE DEAD hits DVD on April 8th which is still a while off so we'll give you another heads up a little closer to the date.
