Hey, I know I'm kind of late with this review and for that I do apologize but I got my screener late and a bunch of other stuff came in at the same time. Wah, wah wah. Like you freakin care right.

Any way I still wanted to pass my thoughts along to you all on I AM LEGEND the Will Smith vehicle that recently hit DVD.

This one a really great story that is ruined by some supper shitty special effects. That pretty much sums up the film in one sentence.

As has been the case with the earlier film versions of the classic story this one tells the tale of a lone man who believes himself to be the last possible man on earth. That is expect for the blood thirsty creatures that come out every night to stand outside his house to taunt him.

THE LAST MAN ON EARTH with Vincent Price was the first adaptation and the one that most folks my age remember is THE OMEGA MAN which of course starred Charlton Heston. Both fore mentioned actors performed wonderfully in their versions as does Will Smith in this more modern retelling . Yes, I am afraid what ruins this one are the god awful digital effects.

It is groan city from the first moment that you see the computer rendered crap that the film makers attempt to stuff down our throats. For the level of production that this film boasts I really can't figure out why they went with the straight CGI style of film making. Sometimes it works but not very often and unfortunately for us this is one occurrence where it doesn't work at all.

Not that Smith doesn't do his damnedest to save this turd. He acts the hell out of it but it is just not enough to pull this one out of the technological hell in which those behind the film placed it.

Another story all together though are the exceptional special features that Warner Brothers have included on this release. I have the two disc special edition which is just crammed full of specail features that are not only entertaining but also incredibly informative. Disc one is the theatrical version of the film as well as a pretty cool four part animated comic that is well worth a look. Disc two has the unrated alternate version that has a completely different ending which I find myself enjoying more then the one that they chose to use. Also included is a digital copy of the film that you can download onto your computer and watch anytime you like. I still find this technology cool as hell.

Warner Brothers has put together a world class release for an mediocre film that ends up being a somewhat enjoyable ride as long as you can allow yourself the ability to forgive the decision to go completely CGI and soak in all the info and technology that they throw at you.

IAM LEGEND is available now just about anyplace that you can sell a DVD.
