Story of Kavan
Thilak The News Anchor
Kavan is a political drama thriller. The story revolves around Thilak who is a news anchor working with famous Zen One TV. Founder of Zen One TV is Kalyan who is a corrupt business tycoon using unethical journalism practices to gain TRPs for the channel.
Kalyan does not report anything negative about Dheeran on his channel. He, in fact, gets the commission to portray Dheeran in a positive light. Thereee is also Malar working at Zen One TV channel. She is Thilak’s ex-girlfriend. In the beginning, she avoids Thilak but later understands his true feelings and get back together.
Kalpana was in Trouble
Later, as the plot unfolds, Kalpana who is a good friend of Malar is raped. The blame has been put on her boyfriend Abdul. Thilak and Malar along with Ashok ( creative head of the channel) secretly take Kalapana out of the hospital where her life is considered to be under threat. It is later revealed that Kalpana has actually been raped by goons of Dheeran for protesting against his factory whose effluents have ruined a village. This confession is then telecasted live on the channel that helps Kalpana gain public support.
To counter this, Kalyan telecasts a video of Kalpana in which she is portrayed as a mentally challenged woman. Enraged Thilak tries to expose Kalyan in a chat show. A fight ensues between Dheeran and Thilak. Thilak assaults Ashok for his involvement in defaming Kalpana’s image. He is fired from the company along with Malar, Jagan, and two other colleagues.
Blacklisted from Major Media Houses
Since they all have been blacklisted from all major media houses, they start working for a very small time struggling media house Muthamizh which is run by Mayilvaganan. Thilak picks up the story of the same village that has been suffering due to effluents coming out from Dheeran’s pesticide factory. Kalpana and Abdul share their story also on the channel. He plants a bomb at district collector’s office and frames Abdul for it. Thilak, Malar, and Mayilvaganan are also framed as co-conspirators. Mutahmizh is banned by the central government. Later, Thilak manages to make the video in which it is proven that they are innocent.
Review of Kavan
Direction
Kavan has been directed by K.V. Anand who has successfully projected the characters in true lights. It is a mass masala movie well taken care of by Anand. One of the finest movies depicting the power of media.
Cinematography
Abinadhan Ramanujam is the cinematographer of Kavan. His work is satisfactory. He is able to project the emotions of the film as well.
Acting
Vijay Sethupati as Thilak is mind-blowing. He has once again proven his mettle with Kavan. Madona Sebastian as Malar looks promising. Akashdeep Saighal as Kalyan and Bose Venkat as Dheeran are also good. They have all performed really well.
Music
Music of the film scores 10 on 10. Hip-hop Tamizh manages to touch the soul of the movie with the required thrill and twists. Happy New Year song is a spot on by the composer.
Verdict
Kavan is one of the finest movies of the year 2017. It depicts the reality of media business with the right dose of masala. Great performances by actors make it a mass entertainer. A must watch.
