The Returned (2013) Review:

For some reason, The Returned has remained under the radar of most horror movie website, and has never been hailed for what it is: one of the most 2013’s most splendid horror work.

This Spanish/Canadian movie is not your usual zombie flick. Instead of focusing on the action and the plague infection/spreading, it completely skips that parts and brings the audience directly in the aftermath of the plague, depicting a post-apocalyptic world where a few “returned” are kept alive thanks to a biological proteins extracted from the infected. As stocks start to run low, the film sets into motion a merciless race for survival. No need to say that the suspense level is very high throughout the all movie.

The scenario is very cleverly written. It really feels like a lot of attention was put into every small detail and pretty much everything is relevant. The movie is also neatly and sharply filmed, with lots of very inventive camera shots. All this gives a beautiful aspect to the movie while never drawing the audience’s attention away from the story. The ending is at the image of the movie, brilliant.

More of a drama than your usual horror, the film is nevertheless an horrific tragedy that will leave you exhausted because of all the emotions it carries with it. A must watch!
