The Orphanage (2007) Review:

The Orphanage is the first full-length feature film by young director J.A. Bayona (The Impossible). It takes the form of a paranormal thriller which blends elements of ghost’s story, haunted house, drama, and great psychological horror.

The best thing about that film is definitely its plot. It is a very clever film with a complex and multilayered story. The film builds up of the tension in the first two thirds, with lots of scary scenes, such as the one in which they play the 1, 2, 3 catch game. The little kid with the mask is quite creepy too.

The last third of the film answers all the questions that the films raised, and delivers many more surprises. You will quickly realize that what appeared like a rather classic ghost story at first, is in fact much more interesting than that.

Other than that, the film is well realized. The acting of Belen Rueda (Los Ojos de Julia) is stunning and the overall atmosphere quite chilling. One of the greatest gem of Spanish cinema!
