Some of the strangest and most violent things can occur in places that you would never imagine.  Having grown up in small town America I know this first hand.

Morgan J. Freeman's new film HOMECOMING drives this point home in grand fashion.

HOMECOMING ends up being an interesting mix of FATAL ATTRACTION and MISERY.  Let me  explain.

SPOILERS FOLLOW!!

The film opens with Mike (Matt Long) getting ready to leave college to head home for a ceremony in his home town where they are going to be retiring his high school football jersey.  Seems he is a bit of a football star and the town is very proud of the fact that he is now playing college ball for NORTHWESTERN.  Thing is he's also bringing along his new girlfriend played by Jessica Stroup.

As often happens MIke left a girlfriend back at home a pretty blond girl named Shelby (Mischa Barton) who is eagerly awaiting his return.  While Mike has headed off for higher education and the high life as a college football hero Shelby has ended up staying in her little town running the bowling alley/bar that her family has left her.

She is eagerly awaiting Mike's return and although it quickly becomes apparent that Mike has done the right thing and broke up with Shelby a while back he did neglect to tell Elizabeth about his hometown love.

Mike does fill Elizabeth in on the whole situation as they are driving home and she accepts the past relationship and seems fine with everything.  They head directly to the football stadium where hugs and fun ensue.  With things wrapped up there everyone decides to head on over to the bowling alley for a few drinks and more fun.  Mike is leary about Elizabeth and Shelby meeting but is convinced by family and friends that all will be fine.  So, off to the bar they head.  It quickly becomes very evident that Shelby, although she has been told it's over, has no clue of just letting it go bt she is polite to Elizabeth and things actually go pretty well.

Shelby get Elizabeth drunk and proceeds to get her feeling very wary of meeting MIke's family telling her how judgmental they are and getting Elizabeth to the point that she now will not go meet Mikes parents.  She wants to go to the local hotel, sleep it off and then meet mom and dad in the morning.

So, Shelby is being a bit of a pain in the ass but nothing serious.

They had driven Elizabeth's car from the college but neither Mike nor her is fit to drive so Mike's cousin takes them to the hotel where they drop off Elizabeth and then he takes Mike home to mom and dad.

In one of the films dumbest moments Elizabeth is turned away from the motel in the middle of nowhere because there are no rooms although the vacancy sign is lit up.  It is just blamed on a broken sign and the old bastard behind the front desk just send this lovely young lady out into the night without even as much as a second glance.  It truly is one of those groan-able moments.

Of course her cell phone has no signal and old motel bastard won't come back to the door even though not just 3 minutes ago the motel was all lit up and she just kind of walked into the wide open lobby but now all of a sudden all is dark and locked up.  Stupid.

So she does the only thing she can do - wander off into the dark into an area she has never been in her life.  So, can you guess what happens?

Ok, I give, I'll tell you.  While wandering down the road she gets hit by none other then Shelby.  I know, you didn't see that coming did  you.

Actually though this is the point where the film actually gets pretty good.  Shelby takes Elizabeth back to her place and kind of slowly goes out of her mind.  I'll stop with the blow by blow now as I don't want to run the last third of the film for you.

Lets just say the last half hour makes having to sit through the first hour bearable.

I watched this film with my daughter and she seemed to really enjoy it.  Younger stars, not a ton of blood and a story line about love gone wrong.  Definitely tailored to a certain demographic.

This one isn't for you "hard core" horror fans,  not a lot in this one for you but if you looking for a well acted, well  put together little thriller pic with a couple of creepy moments then this one is for you.

HOMECOMING opens on July 17th
