This, THIS is what a zombie film is supposed to be.
DEAD SNOW is probably the single best zombie film since DAY OF THE DEAD, I shit you not.
I stuck this sucker in the DVD player not expecting much at all. When I seen it was sub titled I expected even less and I have got to say......WOW!!!
This film is brilliantly shot, wonderfully acted and chock full of some of the best practical make up's to grace a screen since ROMERO and SAVINI used to make us all squeal with delight.
DEAD SNOW tells the tale of a group of friends heading to the mountains for some fun and frolicking. What they end up doing is defending themselves from a horde of freshly awakened Nazi soldiers and oh yeah, they are zombies. Like Zombie's aren't bad enough but they have to be Nazi's to boot.

Once our troop and the dead Nazi's meet up what follows are some of the most original, vicious, gore soaked minutes to be put to film.
SPOILERS AHEAD.
I have got to just give you a little taste. This is a spoiler so stop reading if you don't want to know but this is a great moment but it is only one moment in a landslide of great moments.
One of the scenes has one of the main characters hanging over a ledge and being spared from certain death by hanging onto the intestines of one of the zombies. You have got to see it to believe it. Original, disgusting, kinda funny, it has it all.
And the last 20 or so minutes are just a non stop gore fest.
But, all of this is done with an underlying dark humor that is spot on and refreshing.
I find myself comparing DEAD SNOW to a handful of films. Some of them don't make sense but once you see the film, I think you just might agree.
I noticed a lot of EVIL DEAD influence, a ton of ROMERO dead film similarities and (this is the one that will sound out of place) a particular flair toward THE DESCENT. Watch and see if you don't agree.
Another thought keeps popping into my mind. This is a film that ROMERO should have made. This is waht LAND OF THE DEAD should have been. I really think that DEAD SNOW is the next step in the DEAD mythos. Just wait till you see what they have come up with and you will realize that this is the same ingenuity and originality that were the staple of ROMERO'S earlier zombie films. He has seemed to have lost some of what DEAD SNOW has in his last few films and I am excited to see that someone has picked up the torch of fun, intelligent horror film making.
I know ROMERO has a film of this caliber floating around in him and I can't wait till he gets around to making it.
DEAD SNOW is an absolutely fantastic film that is required viewing by anyone who calls them selves a horror fan. If you have been waiting for a zombie film that takes you back to the feeling you had the first time you watched the original DAWN OF THE DEAD or THE EVIL DEAD then you've found it.
DEAD SNOW is available now on IFC ON DEMAND and although I have not seen it ON DEMAND I am told that it is English dubbed so you won't have to read the subtitles. It will be hitting DVD in the fall. If you can find it, watch it.
