Man, this flick took a beating when it hit theaters. Folks didn't just dislike it they down right hated it. Kind of surprised me a bit actually as Megan Fox, at the time, was pretty much the flavor of the month after her success on the TRANSFORMER films and the fact that she is drop dead gorgeous. This film just goes to show you though that you can't just have a hot star, nope, as I have said soooo many times before, it's all about the story and unfortunately this story just isn't that good.
With that being said though, this film ain't all that horrible. It's a good "time waster" It doesn't really hurt anything, it's adequately put together and actually for the most part looks (from a film making stand point) pretty good. Nice production value is what I am trying to say.
SPOILERS AHEAD
The story, for what it's worth, tells the tale of two friends Jennifer (Fox) and Needy actually very well played by Amanda Seyfried. Needy is your typical nerdy type and Fox is the hot cheerleader, boy magnet. It's the standard "Odd Couple" pairing as these two are best friends. It's been a lifelong friendship kindled in a sandbox when there were but wee lasses.
Not sure why we need to know that, but we do. Anyway...when we meet up with the girls they are getting ready to head out to club to check out a hot band playing a gig in town. They show up at the show and Jennifer uses her um, assets to gain access to the show where we find out that the band is actually a band of evil baddies looking for someone to sacrifice. Yeah, you guessed it, they choose Jennifer, throw her in the band van and take off. Things go wrong and Jennifer ends up getting possessed by some kind of nasty demon that makes her hungry for men, literally. She shows up at Needy's all bloody and torn up and pukes up a butt load of black sewage all over her only to show up at school the next day looking more killer then ever and acting as if nothing ever happened.
Jennifer starts feeding off the boys at school using her knock out body to lure the eager boys in and then ripping them to shreds. Nice, huh.
It doesn't take Needy long to figure things out and she goes on the hunt to stop her childhood friend from wiping out the whole school.
JENNIFER'S BODY garnered a lot of attention while in production because it was written by Diablo Cody who wrote JUNO which of course was a huge hit last year and it was quite the buzz when it was announced that her next project would be a horror project the genre world was all excited. Then it was announced that it was going to star Megan Fox and horror geeks everywhere got a warm feeling inside. Problem is, I THINK, the fact that they rely way to heavily on Megan Fox just looking hot (which she does) then to bother taking the time to develop some characters that we actually care about. The come close with the Needy character but every time it looks like we are actually going to get some character development we instead dive into a" gross out" moment or a" Megan Fox being hot" moment. It happens time and time again.
As I stated above, its not that it's horribly acted or horribly written, directed, etc. It's just not a good story and that is the kiss of death for any film.
If you find yourself sitting around some night with the only disc within arms reach being JENNIFER'S BODY, you could do worse. It's just not worth much more effort then that to check out.
Hardly any Special Features on the disc I watched. Probably holding out for the inevitable Collectors Edition sometime in the future.
