This franchise has kind of quietly become one of the best in horror. This latest installment is just as inventive and bloody as any of its earlier installments.
I actually had a great time with THE FINAL DESTINATION. There is nothing really new here, same old story line. Guy at sporting event witnesses a huge accident that wipes out a slew of folks, this time it's a car race. A series of events take place that results in a huge crash that ends up taking out a bunch of the spectators in the stands in a most gruesome fashion. Of course the initial vision is just that, a vision and he snaps back into real time just in time to save most of his friends and most of the folks sitting around him. Although they are safe for now Death is still on the hunt and is one by one taking out those that should have perished in the order that they would have died at the track. As in previous installments no one wants to believe the visions that our lead dude is having until it's to late and the death scenes become more and more wacky as we go.
The same formula that has worked in the previous three films and it works just as well for this fourth go around. Some questionable CGI this time around though. The early scenes of the grandstand falling apart and squashing some folks look pretty lame but the practical stuff is all top notch and the blood really flows this time.
It's a shame that they haven't figured out a way to bring the 3D theater experience to home video as films like THE FINAL DESTINATION and MY BLOODY VALENTINE were actually event films in the theater because of the new 3D technology but for the home video release we are forced back to the old red and green glasses, welcome back to the 50's version of 3D technology and it really does hurt the film. The 3D end of things just isn't there. I actually ended up just watching the film in it''s 2D version as I was finding the piss poor 3D to be more of a distraction than a "fun option".
If you didn't see the film in the theater in all it's 3D glory then you may not find the DVD version of 3D quite so annoying but if you did check it out at the cineplex do your self a favor and avoid the 3D DVD, go with the standard version and save yourself the aggravation.
As far as special feature go, well. No feature commentary, no "making of" fun. We do get a handful of deleted scenes, a digital copy of the film and of course bot the 3D and 2D versions of the film. A couple pair of 3D glasses are thrown in as well. I like the movie enough that I would have really enjoyed a film makers commentary and I'm always a sucker for a good "making of" segment . As is more and more becoming the norm, and this really pisses me off BTW, the Blu Ray version gets all the goodies and those of us that don't want to once again go out and buy a new player and then re-buy, again, all of our favorite films get the shaft. Ah well, we will all fall in line and go Blu-ray as it has already been determined that that is the future of home video.
To recap. THE FINAL DESTINATION, fun, well made horror retread that bring nothing really new to the table but at the same time doesn't hurt anything. If you have enjoyed the other chapters of the franchise then you wont' be disappointed. If you're picking it up strictly for the 3D aspect, don't bother. The DVD 3D just don't work. It never has and it still don't. If the recent trend of remakes or sequels doing the 3D thing is going to spread into the home video market then someone is going to have to find a way to bring that awesome new theater technology home. I'm sure it's already being worked on.
THE FINAL DESTINATION is out now and as mentioned you can get either the standard version or of course the Blu Ray which does give you some more special feature options or you can go the VOD route and just watch it without having to leave the comfort of your home.
