That's why it pains me a bit to have to tell you RESIDENT EVIL: AFTERLIFE falls way short of being an acceptable chapter in the ongoing franchise. The film is disjointed, often times confusing and at its worst points down right embarrasing.
The story line has Milla Jovovitch returning as Alice. She is traveling the country via small plane searching for survivors and hunting for the folks that she shipped away at the end of EXTINCTION. After a while she finds herself once again going head tohead with WESKER and the Umbrella Corp. as they continue their plot to unleash the T-virus and take over the world. In an attempt to rid themselves once and for all of the pain in the ass Alice she is injected with an antidote which cleanses her of the virus and thus takes away all of here "super powers".
Surprisingly not a whole lot of zombie action in this one instead we are treated to MATRIX like action sequences that show a lot of Milla spinning, flipping and dodging things. Although cool, not really what a Resident Evil film should be all about. It seems that with AFTERLIFE they have taken the francise to its furtherest point yet away from the zombie genre and are attemping to instead make it an action adeventure high tech fiasco. I don't like it, not one little bit.
Can't fault the actors none, they all do a respectable enough job. I mean, when you're given a crap storyline to follow just what exactly are you to do? Milla does that best she can with what they give her to work with and she tries to play it straight although I have to admit I don't see how she could keep a straight face.
Truly ashamed what they have let these films become.
I can see that some of this might have been cool if you managed to see it in 3D but I can honestly tell you that any gags that worked in 3D in the theaters most certainly do not transfer over to the 2D blu-ray.
Now, when it comes to the quality of the disc and the extras included, we're talking a different ball game. The disc looks amazing. Sounds amazong as well. Some of the best blu-ray that I've watched. They've loaded the disc up with a ton of special feature:
2D Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D Special Features
Back Under the Umbrella: Directing Afterlife
Band of Survivors: Casting Afterlife
Undead Dimension: Resident Evil in 3D
Fighting Back: The Action of Afterlife
Vision of the Apocalypse: The Design of Afterlife
New Blood: The Undead of Afterlife
Pwning the Undead: Gamers of the Afterlife
DVD Special Features
It's worth picking up the disc just to spend some time with the special features. It's another of those situations where the special features end up being better then the feature.
