Just watched Alex Aja's remake of PIRANHA and I'm a bit confused.  While I like the film a lot, actually, I kind of loved it, it is amazing to me just how bad it is.

So now you're confused, right?

Let me explain.  On a scale of pure fun PIRANHA is a great ride, it truly is.  Way over the top, tons of blood, tons of boobs, fast paced and action packed.  From the opening scene of Richard Dreyfuss and the whirlpool of biting death to the very last jump scare I was smiling from ear to ear.

On a cinematic scale this one is pretty much as vacant as you can get.  I really expect more for Aja who is (was) one of the genres premiere talents.  I mean, HIGH TENSION, great flick.  I even liked what he did with THE HILLS HAVE EYES remake.  He just has a visual style that appeals to me but this one?  Yikes.  It's choppy, disjointed and at times downright distracting.  The "star" cameo's are oddly placed and obviously just kind of thrown in to provide some star power and while the gore and gags are fantastic they end up coming off like punch lines to jokes that aren't particularly funny.

Does that come off as harsh?  Too bad.

The true star and obvious high points are the gore gags which are some most fun I've had in a while.  This one reminds me a lot of those flicks that came out in the late 70's when the whole movie was built upon the last 15 minutes of the flick when all the action happened.  Exactly what happens here.  The film opens with an underwater earthquake at a lake side community gearing up for the huge spring break bash.  Tons of drunk, horny, naked collegians are descending on the town and of course this is the season all the retailers live for as they clean up financially.    The town sheriff played by Elizabeth Shue knows something is wrong and wants to close the lake but the local officials are concerned about the bottom line (JAWS, anyone) and by the time Shue takes matters into her own hands the feeding frenzy has begun.

Jerry O'Connell plays a "Girl's Gone Wild" type producer who is going around convincing all the large breasted ladies that he needs to film their boobies.  Of course most all are more then willing to oblige.  The whole film slowly winds toward the final showdown between man, boob and fish.  O'Connell's death is, well we'll leave it as.... memorable and is sure to induce more than a few groans of both pain and disgust.

This one is a hard one for me because I really did enjoy the film.  I smiled the whole time I was watching it but it's just so......bad.  I think I'm going to have to chalk this one up to guilty pleasure.

Give it a spin, don't expect much, kind of turn off the brain and enjoy it for what it is , bloody, booby fun.

Sony has made this one available in every format known to man.  The disc I got was the PIRANHA 3D version which is a 3D blu-ray.  It also play in regular 2D blu-ray as well.  It's also available in a regular blu-ray and of course good old DVD.  All the different version come with varying degree's of special features.

The version I looked at had a directors commentary and 10 "making of" features.  Lots of good stuff and it goes without saying that the film looked and sounded....perfect.  Pick the version that's right for you and go fishing.
