Now this is interesting. Few directors in the horror biz have sparked as much debate, loathing and just plain hatred as Eli Roth. Personally I have never much cared for his work but did feel that his last few attempts (THANKSGIVING TRAILER and HOSTEL II) showed some growth and actual talent. Seems that just his percieved arogent attitude alone was enough to turn some fans cold.
Anyhow, one of his largest detractors is one Nikki Finke and Eli dropped her a line to her know that he is done, calling it quits in the old horror genre.
Whatever.
I knew when I heard that they had pulled him from prepping CELL that something was up. Check out this letter that he sent to Ms. Finke:
"As far as violence goes, I think at this point I've pushed the
boundaries of horror as far as I can, and it's someone else's turn to
take over spilling blood and guts. I have new challenges and much more
ambitious ideas that are not horror related that I'm working on, as
well as other artistic endeavors outside of film. I love directors like
Sam Raimi and Peter Jackson, who pushed the boundaries of gore and
horror in their early career, and then took that same energy and
aesthetic and applied it to other genres. I'll always love horror and
I'm sure I'll make more horror movies, but once you've spilled that
much blood, you kind of have it out of your system and look for other
ways to make audiences scream and cheer and vomit."
Ok, so maybe he isn't gone for good but he's gone for now. I think we can all use a break. Him from us and us from him.
I still say that there is some great work inside this man. Time will tell and it will be interesting to see what happens. Personally I'm glad to see the whole "torture porn" thing go away. On to bigger and better things.
