Havent done one of these in a while. For those of you not familiar with Dismembered Thoughts let me bring you up to speed. I created this little column as a place for me to rant or rave about anything I damn well please, I havent done one since moving this whole dog and pony show over to HOH but I just have to speak up on what I witnessed.
Last night I watched the latest installment of Masters of Horror and was just completely blown away by the hour. This is not a review, our Mr. VanFleet has been handling that task and doing a damn fine job at it I might add. No review here, rather just some meaningless rambling from a fan that loved what he witnessed. This is how horror is supposed to be. Tongue in cheek, satirical, in your face and difficult to watch. I dont know about you but that scene in the airport hanger with all the flag draped coffins of the fallen heroes was unbelievable. It gives me shivers just thinking about.
This episode was titled HOMECOMING and was directed by Joe Dante. Ill tell you what, Im not sure MOH can top this one. This is what Land of the Dead should have been. This episode wore its heart on its sleeve. Romero built his career out of making political statements out of his horror films and Dante has picked up the reigns with this episode and done the genre proud.
The imagery witnessed during this hour is so intense and so in your face that some may have a hard time with it, some may even be offended by it but the message is so important and so timely that you cant afford to look away. I give Showtime a lot of credit for having the guts to air this episode. I know some of the suits had to have a problem with it.
Make no mistake, this is horror as art. Dante and the folks involved had a message to deliver and it was recieved loud and clear.
Dante has raised the bar with this episode and the folks that follow will have a lot to live up to. Thanks to all involved for giving us an unforgettable, intelligent, opinionated and overall well-crafted hour of horror entertainment. This is one of those times that we can all be proud to call ourselves horror fans.
