Karuppan Hit or Flop
Karuppan is a Tamil language movie and unable to hit on Box Office Collection. While releasing everyone is expecting that Karuppa Movie will rock on Box Office but somehow manages to collect only Rs.14.44 Cr whereas the budget was Rs.17 Cr. Also, Karuppan has received only 5.6/10 rating from IMDb and it is rated by 432 users from IMDb.
Story of Karuppan
Vijay Sethupathy as Karuppan
Kuruppan is quite the same as there is the same language that you find in village life to be and the film’s about a family in the village. This laziness in the story development would not be bearable for a good film but Karuppan film has heart and Vijay Sethupathi. In one scene we find Karuppan’s mother who is mute but still is sitting merrily on a swing. But Karuppan goes one step further and shows you a quick shot of a young girl on that swing, capturing the nostalgic joy that this woman feels.
She is not even central to the film which shows how much time is taken by Panneerselvam. It is evident in the hero and friend get the drunk scene. Karuppan and his friend/uncle (Singampuli, a riot) have plenty of time to mimic songs like Naan Yen Pirandhen, Yaarukaaga, Nethu Rathiri, and cursory songs like Ajith and Vijay songs. We somewhere, begin to like Karuppan for not being in a hurry to get somewhere.
Villain Kathir
But you want her to eventually get somewhere, do something with her one-note, love-struck villain, Kathir (Bobby Simha with a single expression to convey cunning). Panneerselvam is too busy in showing the cute relationship between Karuppan and Anbu who is played by Tanya. The husband and wife relationship is another part of the good wife changing the alcoholic husband. Any other actor in place of Vijay Sethupathi might have ended up making all the idle talk not bearable, but Vijay keeps us surprised. He’s being playful around his wife calling her as Mr. Anbu while singing old songs and dancing along the way to old songs. The actor feels free to be express his feelings which a star isn’t allowed to do.
Karuppan and Anbu get Married
Anbu’s brother Pasupathi played as Maayi loses her for marriage in a bet that he lost to Karuppan. She’s married away as she says I cannot let my big brothers head fall down with shame after losing the bet. But there is a problem of lack of permission in such a kind of love story film. In reality, Anbu had already fallen for Karuppan in a chance encounter. Maayi also is shown as a decent man but no decent man bets his sister at a competition of a bullfight known as Jallikattu.
The director gets Maayi to reveal that he too already found Karuppan to be a decent person before the competition. The biggest point was the absence of courage from Anbu who is a pawn in a tussle between Karuppan, Kathir and Maayi all claim to love her. She is shown to be a fierce full lady character. While in her first meeting with Karuppan she slaps him, she is later shown with a sickle to scare him. All these scenes are set in a village, where it is heartwarming to be seen as riding a Bullet and driving a jeep. All this doesn’t bring any fruits.
Kathir’ Planning to Trouble Karuppan
What next is the storyline which is moving at a very slow pace with three songs in the first half to show how much Karuppan and Anbu love each other? In the meantime, Kathir is planning to bring trouble to Karuppan and soon the clash of their egos becomes violent. Thereee is not much effort spent on creating the story of this family drama. My hands up to the team of Karuppan for giving the heroine a good and strong character and Tanya is perfect for the role. Vijay Sethupathi is brilliant in his action scenes which are showcased to display the manly strength of him.
However, choosing such a done-to-death story is a complete letdown for the versatile actor. The music of D Imman is not impressive and is often more of a distraction than an addition to the storyline. And the climax, well, the whole theater, at least 20 minutes before we got there, knew what it would be.

Direction Review
Director Panneerselvam was praised for his direction which was a step forward with the film Renigunta, but now he has put it a several steps backward with his latest film Karuppan if not because of the actors part all his three lead actors could have gone a lot worse
Performance Review
The film was okay to some extent. Vijay Sethupathi and all the actors played very well in the film. Songs and BGM were also very good. Comedy and fight scenes in the movie were impressive. Thereee was nothing new to the story but the movie was enjoyable.
Music Review
D. Imman is the support of ‘ Karuppan ‘ with all the songs that are pleasing to the ears and the background score also makes the film more lively and interesting to hear.
Verdict
This film shows the love and belief between the actor and the actress. Whoever disturbs them it doesn’t matter for them. Vijay Sethupathy has performed a brilliant and relaxed performance. The heroine Anbu plays the role of a simple homemaker and she lived the character as the film demands.
