Story of Photograph
Rafi A Photographer
Rafi ( Nawazuddin Siddiqui) hails from a small town of Uttar Pradesh and comes to Mumbai to repay his debt. By profession, he is a struggling photographer, who is fighting daily to earn some money on the high profile and posh streets of Mumbai city. He mainly does his photography on Gateway of India. he used to click pictures of people and mostly the tourists who come to see the beauty of Mumbai and Gateway of India.
Rafi is struggling daily to survive in a city like Mumbai and for earning money. Also, He belongs to a lower middle-class Muslim family from Uttar Pradesh and his only relative id his grandmother Farrukh Jaffer who is still living in Uttar Pradesh as Rafi came to Mumbai to earn money. He is not highly educated nor sophisticated or classy. Rafi is sharing his room with four other men in Mumbai and living a tough life in Mumbai.
Rafi Meets Miloni
One day, a usual day in Rafi’s life where he is on Gateway of India and convincing people to get clicked and doing a usual hard work. Some get convinced and he captures them in his camera and earns some money while some rejects to get clicked. Miloni (Saniya Malhotra) a Gujarati girl belongs to upper-middle-class Gujarati family, rich, intelligent and beautiful girl who is pursuing Chartered accounting visits Gateway of India. Rafi, as usual, trying to convince Miloni also for photographs. And eventually, he convinced her for the photograph by saying sweet things about her, hence he clicked her beautiful picture.
Grandmother’s Last Wish
Here Rafi’s grandmother who is living in Uttar Pradesh and Rafi used to communicate with her via letters. Rafi loves his grandmother the most. His grandmother is getting older and she wishes to see Rafi getting married before she dies so she starts building pressure on Rafi to get married as soon as possible.
Rafi Ignoring His Grandmother
Rafi is ignoring her initially but his grandmother is in no mood to listen to him. on every second day, she is forcing him to get married. To get rid of his grandmother’s nagging Rafi finds a way. He sent Miloni’s photograph to his grandmother which he clicked on Gateway of India and tells her that Miloni is her Fiance and he will marry her soon. Now Rafi thought his grandmother will keep quiet but instead of that after seeing Miloni’s photo he tells Rafi that she is coming to Mumbai to meet her.
Miloni Meet Grandmother
Here on hearing grandmother is coming Rafi gets worried about his lie and he searched for Miloni to convince her to meet his granny for once. Somehow he manages to find her and they meet eventually there he narrates the whole story and his lie about her photo. Initially, she resists but she sees honesty in Rafi and agreed to meet his grandmother. So before his grandmother arrives, they discuss the things to tell if his grandmother asks something and finally, Miloni meets his grandmother and she likes her very much.
The Questions with No Answer
Now granny starts meeting her regularly so as Rafi. And during these meetings, they come closer in spite of the difference in their cultures, caste, status, education the two strangers become good friends. And on the other hand, granny telling Miloni that she has become very old now and wanted to see Rafi getting married. Now the story revolves around this only, will Rafi and Miloni fall in love with each other? will they marry? will grandmother’s last wish get fulfilled?
Review of Photograph
Directed by Ritesh Batra, Produced by Ronnie Screwala, Viola Fugen, Neil Kopp,Michel Merkt,Vincent Savino,Anish Savjani and Michael Weber Photograph is a romantic movie where two strangers meet with the huge difference in their culture, caste, social and financial status, education and family background and how they come close to each other is beautifully by Ritesh Batra.
Review of Story and Screenplay
He is famously known for his masterpiece movie Lunchbox with Nawazuddin and Namrit Kaur. it was his debut film which became a super hit movie so the people expecting to see the same magic in Photograph also. It is a wonderful movie to watch.
The screenplay is but slow and the romance what people expect from the romantic movie is not there but it is a worth watch movie and one will enjoy the movie though it fails to create the same magic as a Lunch box.
Starcast Performance
Nawazuddin Siddiqui, he is an extraordinary actor who paints the movie with the shades of his acting. he is a kind of an actor who proves himself whether the movie gets flop or hit he convinces the audience with his peculiar acting skills. Here in the photograph also he did a marvelous job but his talent did not come out fully because the movie lacks in the screenplay
Saniya Malhotra, A Dangal fame actress has done a handful of movies after Dangal and proves her acting skills and screen presence. Here in photograph playing an Upper-class Gujarati girl she has done a good job and justice to her character but acting with Nawazuddin Siddiqui is not easy for the newcomer like her. Matching his timing and acting skill is the most difficult job for his co-star.
Music Review
Peter Raeburn is the music director of the movie hence the movie does not have any original songs but two most popular retro songs are used in the movie. One is sung by the legend Mohammed Rafi, Tumne Mujhe Dekha Ho Kar Meherbaan and the other one is a song from the movie Norrie.
