I had no idea what YELLOWBRICKROAD was about when I slapped it into the DVD player, none at all.
With at title like that one can't help but dream up some kind of WIZARD OF OZ theme and it is mentioned in the film. The title actually comes from the words that are left behind in the wake of the disappearance of the entire population of the town of Friar New Hampshire in 1940. One night the entire town just got up and walked into the woods. The ARMY sent out a search party where they found most all dead from exposure but some had been ripped to pieces but most simply vanished.
Flash forward to present day and we meet up with a group of young explorers, they are well informed on the happenings back in 1940 and thanks to some just recently released information they are setting out to head up the same path that the townsfolk took all those years ago, they are heading up the YELLOWBRICKROAD.
That is what was written at the marker at the point where the townsfolk wandered into the forest YELLOWBRICKROAD, an obvious reference to the film that had just come out the year before the mass disappearance.
Our group meets up with a local when they follow the GPS co-ordinates given to them. The local claims to know the true location of the marker, the trail head which is the point that they are looking for to retrace what happened back in 1940.
Off they go but things quickly take a turn for the worse.
The final half of the film plays out like BLAIR WITCH PROJECT complete with strange noises and unexplained happenings. As always happens in these tales it isn't long to friends turn against each other and team work deteriorates into survival of the fittest.
While not exploring any completely new ground YELLOWBRICKROAD does do a wonderful job of telling an interesting story while at the same time keeping it just creepy enough to make you wonder just what the hell is going on.
The men behind the magic, Andy Milton and Jesse Holland take their cast of unknowns and build a tension filled tale that by its finale will have you at the edge of your seat. To say more would ruin the view for you so I will leave it there. While the opening is intriguing, it can be a bit slow at times but stick with it as the final third of the film (from the point where the creepy music in the woods starts) till the end is unnerving to say the least.
Overall I would say this one is in my Top 10 so far this year
Premiering at the SLAMDANCE FILMFEST in 2010 word of mouth has really kept buzz alive on this one and now it's getting a limited theatrical run at AMC theaters with a debut date of June 1st. I'm sure a DVD release will not be far behind and when the word comes, I'll make sure you know about it
YELLOWBRICKROAD is one trail worth taking.
