Let's start this review off right shall we?
SAW VI delivers. That's right, you heard me SAW VI kicks some major butt and I think it's great.
I find it really hard to believe that a film franchise can be seven years in and still deliver the goods as effectively and so to the point as SAW has managed to do. I think a lot of the credit goes to the writers of the last couple, Marcus Dunstan dnd Patrick Melton. They have really breathed new life in what a few films back was becoming a dying franchise. The dynamic duo of Dunstan and Melton brought new characters in and started them down a path that all comes together in SAW VII and the pieces fit nicely.
Some SPOILERS from this point on so proceed with caution!!
If this film had given itself a subtitle it would have been JIGSAW HAS HIS OWN IDEA OF HEALTH CARE REFORM. In this chapter the games that JIGSAW has his hand picked cronies unviel center around the insurance company that refused him the treatments that could have saved his life. Detective Hoffman and JIGSAW 'S wife are carrying out the plans that he left in that box after he died. In the box were six envelopes that contained the names of the players in this game.
The insurance company goes out of their way to find reasons not to cover much needed medical procedures for those that hold their coverage. They goes as far to actually have a whole team whose job it is is to go through each and every claim and find a reason to not cover the requested procedures.
Problem is they cross the wrong dude. This all happens in flashbacks of course but we go on to learn that John (Jigsaw) has crossed paths with this room full of scum bags when he was fighting his cancer. Well, now it's time for John's revenge.
He has left specific instructions for Hoffman on how to handle this special band of human scum. The lead douche bag is kidnapped and finds himself in the grips of one of JIGSAW'S "lessons". He must pass through lesson after lesson, all of which end up effecting those he works with. The traps and games this time around are particularly inspired and all play into the plot line of this man having the power of life or death by making decisions on who get needed medical care and who isn't deemed worthy.
While slightly preachy, it works and it works well.
The blood flows freely in this one and a couple of the traps are actually quite awe inspiring. I found myself on more than one occasion kind of sitting on the edge of my seat while the games played out. I really enjoyed this film, I didn't expect to but I did. Along the way some questions from the previous films get answered and a couple of loose ends get tied up. These things just kind of happen in the context of the current storyline. As I mentioned above, everything just fits into place real nice this time around.
It's nice to see a standard DVD still getting a full slate of special features and LIONSGATE has loaded this one up.
You get a couple of feature length commentaries and a really nice feature on the traps of SAW VI. There are all very good.
A lot of other stuff on there too. I didn't have time to watch it all but based on what I did see it looks like they took the time to do this one up right.
SAW VI is one you should definitely make the time to see. It's worth the effort.
