My commentary on horrorThere had to be a sequel to Evil Dead 2. No one was going to tell me that this series was going to end with the second installment. I had even read in Fangoria an interview with Bruce Campbell on the set of ED 2 in which he discussed plans to make Evil Dead 3. I started to countdown the days from the first mention of this sequel. I probably haven't been this excited to see any movie in all my life. I really got frustrated when they kept pushing back the release date from late summer of 92 to the beginning of 93. I kept saying to myself "Will this movie ever be released?"  Finally, about a week before its released, I started seeing TV ads and  I was so psyched.  I took   the day off from work  and was the first (well, the only one) person  in line at my local theater.  I saw the movie and found it very funny, but not what I expected. Before I could even blink, AOD was out of the theater.

I would have done some things a little different. First, I had hoped that AOD would go back to the horror standards of "Evil Dead", but rather moved more to the comic standards of the Three Stooges. Second, where was the marketing for this movie? Sure, there were tons of Fango articles, but TV ads a week before the release? - give a break!  It just wasn't fair. Third, I would have definitely made this a summer movie. No one goes to see movies like they do in the summer.

I think the video release has done wonders for this movie and that is why out of any of the ED movies, AOD has the most web pages dedicated to it, probably because it has some of the coolest one liners. I definitely recommend this movie, but please be prepared for more of a comedy that a horror film.

As always please e-mail me if you have anything you can add to this page, or if you have any comments, criticisms or suggestion.

Army of DarknessThe Story

Often referred to as "The Three Stooges vs. The Evil Dead". This is the third and hopefully not the final installment in the Evil Dead Trilogy. We find our hero Ash (Bruce Campbell) sucked into a vortex which sends him back in time to 1300 AD. The Wiseman John knows that Ash is the one written about in the Necronomicom , "he who is sent back to deliver them from the evil deadites". But King Arthur suspects he's one of  Henry the Red's men.

After doing battle in the pit, we get a glimpse of Ash's sensitive side. He is able to strike a "deal" with Arthur that if he retrieves the book, they will send him back to his own time. He is instructed that he must say three little words before retrieving the book. If said wrong....he would release the Army of Dead.

While traveling to retrieving the book, he has a little run-in with his evil side. When he finally happens upon the book, he tries to say the words right, really. But, as you can probably surmise from the title, the dead march. Along the way, Ash must do battle with his possessed medieval girlfriend, the Army of Dead, and even himself (as Evil Ash and little Ashes). The end battle scene is a laugh a minute. Complete the trilogy, rent this movie.

Frightful Facts

  • "Trapped in time. Surrounded by evil. Low on gas."

  • Working title on the set of Evil Dead 2, "Evil Dead 1300AD" and also "Medieval Dead".

  • Have you heard of an alternative ending? Well, it does exist. The alternative ending is available on the Japanese laserdisc and a recent UK boxset release of the trilogy. It involves Ash taking drops of a magic potion that will allow him to sleep until the present. Too bad for our hero, because he takes too many drops and oversleeps the end of the world. It now appears on Anchor Bay's SE release of the DVD. I myself, prefer the S-Mart ending.

  • Evil Dead cost about $300K to make, ED2 about $3M, and Army of Darkness about $13M.

  • Dan Elfman from Oingo Bongo wrote the "March of the Dead" for the AOD soundtrack. Buy the soundtrack at Amazon.com

  • Look for a issue of Fangoria in the trunk of Ash's car.

  • A TV version of "Army of Darkness" on the Sci-Fi Channel included some added footage never before seen on any release.

  • The new Special Edition DVD with added footage, the alternative ending, and much more is out of print from Anchor Bay. It is scheduled to be re-pressed with only the director's cut (i.e. disc 2 of the SE) in July.

News & more....

Both Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi have stated that they are both interested in doing Evil Dead 4, but don't foresee it happening anytime soon due to lack of financial backing. All the scripts for Evil Dead 4 that you may find on the net are completely fake.
