Growing up in the 60's and 70's it seemed like every other month the news was filled with grainy black and white videos of men in space suits bouncing around on the moon.  I vividly remember staying up on July 20, 1969 and watching that now infamous footage of the flag on the moon and the lunar rover, etc.

You don't forget stuff like that when it is happening live in your living room and your 8 years old.  It is that sense of awe and wonder that the makers of APOLLO 18 tap into in their above average "found footage" flick that has now come out on Blu-ray and DVD.

Without ruining the view for you the basic story is as such.  We have all been taught and told that Apollo 17 was the last mission to the moon but it turns out that one last moon flight took place, APOLLO 18.  It was a top secret mission to place equipment that would make it easier for the U.S. to keep track of just exactly whatever the hell the Russians were up too.

We follow the mission through a series of "tapes" that have been uncovered and tell the harrowing tale of the fate of this ill fated mission.  All starts off normal enough and we see lots of those images that I remember from my childhood and most of you probably remember from history books.

A SLIGHT SPOILER HERE SO DON"T READ IF YOU WANT TO KNOW NOTHING!

It all starts to go a little awry when one "morning" after waking one of the astronauts notice that the flag they had place outside the LEM has come up missing!  Odd to say the least.  Things get pretty spooky from this point on.

OKAY - SPOILER OVER!

Obviously this turn of events must be investigated and through a series of increasingly disturbing events the true nature of what is going on and why they have been sent becomes obvious to our intrepid explorers.

I found myself completely engrossed in this story and really enjoyed not knowing where they were heading with things.  A wonderful job is done of not revealing too much too soon and to say that the situation the astronauts find themselves in sucks is the understatement of the year.

Through it all great attention is paid to detail and making sure that the images stick very close to the early news footage that was common for the age.  It all looks and feels very realistic.  It's a very claustrophobic, nerve racking ride but one well worth taking.

A nice job is done on the Blu-ray end of things and the whole package is first rate.  It's one of those combo packs with the Blu-ray, DVD and Digital Copy all together.  Also included is commentary track, some deleted scenes and some alternate endings.  All in all a nice job and a damn fine film.
