Film Review: Disorder

Disorder is a great film.  Let’s just state that fact plain and clear right here at the start of all this.  It is well structured, well shot, well acted and just generally well put together.

If I had to find a problem with the film it would have to be the fact that it just seemed a little bit pokey in places but after sitting through the entire film I realize that the slow pacing at times is actually a very important part of the story.  You just don’t realize that until it is all over so be warned, if you think the film is a little slow paced, give it time you’ll be glad you did.

This is one of those stories that telling you all about the plot would ruin the viewing for you so I am going to resort to Readers Digest condensed version of the story line.

When we join the film David Randall is being released after serving some years in a mental institution for a brutal double murder.  He claims that a masked killer committed the crimes, the same masked killer that killed his police officer father when he was young.  His claims of innocence go unheard and he is put away.  Now it is time for his release and he returns to his childhood home.  The problem is the masked killer seems to be up to his/her old tricks as folks start dying left and right or is all of this just a figment of David’s imagination.  You’ll have to view the film to find out cause I am not gonna tell you.

The film does not yet have a release date as of yet but it is poised to start touring the festival circuit this year and I am sure that someone is going to pick this baby up real quick. 

Disorder was written, directed and produced by the very talented Jack Thomas Smith and is his first feature film.  Prior to this experience he produced films for John Russo and Ted Bohus.  Smith has a true flair with the camera.  I particularly enjoyed the way that he shot the nighttime scenes.  So many of these independent films are shot so dark and at times all you see are shadows moving through the murk.  Not the case with Disorder.  Smith shot the film in such a fashion that the nighttime scenes are very clear and easy to follow.  I liked it a lot.

The acting is top notch across the board.  Male lead Darren Kendrick who plays the fore mentioned David Randall is very solid.  He really resembles Bruce Campbell in his appearance and he is one of those actors that his facial expressions and body movements tell you more about the character than the scripted words.  He is very talented and I think we will be seeing lots more from Mr. Kendrick in the near future.

So, is Disorder worth hunting down at the festivals and eventually worth picking up on DVD, oh hell yeah!  Disorder is going to be one of those films that we’re going to be talking about for a while and when Jack Thomas Smith and Darren Kendrick hit it big remember you heard about them here first.
