David Cronenberg's highly successful 1986 film, The Fly, was itself sequelized in 1989. This time the film focus is centered on the offspring of Veronica Quaife and Seth Brundle from the end of the 1986 film. Martin Brundle (Eric Stoltz) is the end product of a quick maturing child....Martin is actually only five years old! After his Mother dies following his birth and with nobody to claim the child, the head of Bartok Industries, Anton Bartok (Lee Richardson) steps in to 'Father' the child. Bartok isn't all sweet and caring, his true motive is to study the child as he matures and becomes 'The Fly'. Martin soon falls for night shift employee, Beth Logan (Daphne Zuniga) and basically all hell breaks loose with Martin and Beth on the run and Martin trying to find out the truth behind his birth. One of the best sequences is between Stathis Borans (John Getz) and Martin, where Martin feels that Borans is his only hope and Borans makes it known in no uncertain terms that he is nobody's 'hope' and he tells Martin of his encounter with Seth Brundle.
The film can't really match the highly entertaining first film, but it does have a few moments, those being the sequence with Borans and Seth as well as some rather gory scenes. It's certainly not a horrible film, I have seen and been exposed to much worse, but even putting all common sense aside, the story makes little sense and just never comes together as it might have. That being said, if you enjoy 'bad' films and can suspend the need for believability, then you'll certainly want to check this film out. If you're a big fan of Cronenberg's film, don't go into this film with hopes as high and you won't be disappointed. Me, I tend to be one of those people that enjoys classic 'bad' films and I can certainly sit and watch this film and enjoy it, I'm just not so sure it falls into the category, 'So bad, it's good'.
