DVD Review: FEAST

I have searched and searched for a way to describe FEAST to you but I think that director John Gulager has done it best. In the special features of the DVD Mr. Gulager summerize the film as follows: "In the first Project Greenlight they made a coming of age film, in the second Project Greenlight project they made a coming of age film, in this Project Greenlight project we ate all those coming of age." It’s paraphrased but you get the idea and I can think of no better way to explain the film.

Over the top, irreverent, go for the throat, no holds barred horror is what FEAST is all about and it serves it up in big nasty, bloody doses. I already reviewed the film (read that here) so for this go around we’ll talk more about the special features and such that the DVD brings into our home.

The film is even better viewing the second time around and being able to sift through the special features on the disc just adds to the party feel of the film. First up after viewing the film was a series of deleted or alternate scenes. They are good but there is a reason that they are deleted or alternates. Still fun to check out though. After that comes the mandatary "Making of" featurette that is entertaining and insightful. I think I expected a little more from it considering they had a TV crew on hand through out the entire process filming the Project Greenlight show but they are careful to not tread on or repeat much of what we got to see when the show was airing. It’s good just not spectacular.

The best part for me was the commentary track. I loved it. I have read other reviews that state it is to off topic and loud and basically a free for all and you know what...it is. That is what makes it so great. These guys really enjoyed working together and it shows with each and every line they speak during this commentary. They banter back and forth, talk over each other and call each other names just like you and your friends do when you’re sitting around having a great bullshit session.

You do have to listen closely at points but there are great little tidbits of info that seep out during this hilarious bit of audio.

FEAST hits DVD on Oct. 17th along with about 2 dozen other horror titles but this one needs to be the first one you grab then RUN home and spin the disc. FEAST is the one that all the other Halloween releases will be compared to.
