On the surface this project appears to have a lot going for it.  Pretty decent stars, an interesting sounding story line, a great director, you get the idea.  I popped in the DVD expecting great things and instead I get a muddled hard to follow disappointment.

You have to really pay attention to this one as the story line is multi-layered and actually not very engaging.  In a nutshell it is about a prison where some 50 years ago some very bad things had happened.  The section of the prison where these atrocities took place has been sealed off since they happened but now the time has come to reopen that wing as a new shipment of inmates is coming and the space is needed.

Inmates and guards break into the sealed off section unknowingly releasing the ghost of a girl who was killed in, yeah you guessed it, the furnace.

What follows is a series of very expected and generic scares that really add up to nothing but a tremendous waste of time.

Director William Butler does a good enough job of setting a spooky atmosphere but really goes nowhere with it.  Our principals are placed into a series of very predictable situations where very predictable outcomes are revealed.  All in all it just becomes yet another haunted prison tale with no new insight or premise.

Odd casting as well.  We've got Tom Sizemore (how the hell did he go from Saving Private Ryan to this) Ja Rule (whatever), Danny Trejo and Michael Pare who actually ends up being the only one in this one who acts like they want to be there.  I have liked Pare ever since Eddie and the Cruisers and it is great to see him back in form.  If there is one reason to watch this one it is to watch Pare do his thing.

The DVD hits on February 12th and as always I recommend you check it out and make your own opinion but I'm afraid that this one just didn't do much for me.  Here is all the OFFICIAL info from Genius Products:

Gruesome deaths and horrifying secrets unravel from the flames as Genius Products releases Melee Entertainment and Swirl Films’ heart-pounding supernatural thriller Furnace on DVD February 12, 2008. Featuring an all-star cast that includes Michael Paré (BloodRayne Eddie and the Cruisers), Tom Sizemore (Black Hawk Down, Saving Private Ryan), Danny Trejo (Rob Zombie’s Halloween, Grindhouse, The Devil’s Rejects,), and multi-platinum hip hop recording artists Ja Rule (The Fast and The Furious, Assault on Precinct 13) and Paul Wall, the DVD will be available to own for $19.95 SRP with a pre-order date of January 2, 2008.

Directed by William Butler (Madhouse), Furnace is packed with haunting suspense and intense fight scenes that will leave you hanging on the edge of your seat! The DVD includes blazing hot special features such as seven shocking alternate scenes and in-depth interviews with Danny Trejo, Ja Rule and Tom Sizemore.

"What I like most about Furnace is that it is my kind of horror film, I'm into horror films where things could be real like exorcisms and ghosts. There is also a great cast so it was a film I definitely wanted to be involved with,” said Ja Rule.
