I'm not going to lie to you, this movie is a freakin mess.
I can only hope that this film is setting up the next two films as this thing is all over the place and is very difficult to follow.
That being said, it does look good. The traps or games or whatever you want to call them are more elaborate and better then ever. Some demented shit going on here and it's all fun. Unfortunately the story this time around is so convoluted and silly that all those great games get lost in the fog.
Mild Spoilers ahead (as if it makes any difference, the film makes no sense anyway)
The film opens with the autopsy of Jigsaw and it is graphic and nasty. During the process a tape is discovered in the stomach of our demented puppet lover and off the movie goes.
We are introduced to a wealth of characters that come an go in an never ending parade of confusing crap that just gets worse with every passing moment and doesn't end till the credits roll. As I stated above I can only hope that this is all setting up something in the next two films that is going to knock my socks off.
If you have been a fan of the previous films you'll probably find enough in this one to get your yearly fix but don't expect any blockbuster moments this time around. If you're new to the series, don't start here
In the story department this one is clearly the weakest of the bunch.
As far as special features go these are passable but again nothing really earth shattering.
There is a video diary from the director where he really comes off as kind of whiny and it really does kind of seem that he really don't want to be doing the film but there are a few interesting moments that I feel show some true behind the scenes emotion.
Of course there are the standard commentary tracks and a pretty cool little TRAPS OF SAW IV featurette that I enjoyed.
Bottom line. Cool look, cool traps, good gore, really really sucky story line.
SAW IV will assault DVD on Jan. 22nd.
Here's all the info from LIONSGATE on the release:
PROGRAM
DESCRIPTION
SAW IV, the fourth film
in the extremely successful film series, continues its games on DVD
and blu-ray (BD) on January 22, available in rated and unrated
versions and dripping with special features. The DVD and Blu-ray
features include audio commentaries, featurettes, a music video and a
deleted scene. The BD also premieres the world’s first interactive
Blu-ray disc movie blog, called MoLog™. This
brand new feature is the world's first Blu-ray blog, which allows
users to create and share their own added value content via blog
entries. This is truly the next generation of interactivity, and
allows each person to create their own unique Special Edition of SAW
IV.
The SAW film series has managed
to ratchet up tension and invention with each successive film, while
jangling millions of nerves worldwide. Surpassing Freddie and Jason,
the SAW series is now the most profitable horror franchise,
both theatrically and on DVD in movie history, taking in over $400
million in worldwide box office and sales exceeding 18 million units
on DVD.
With
Amanda and Jigsaw dead, two seasoned FBI profilers, Agent Strahm
(Scott Patterson) and Agent Perez, arrive at the depleted police
precinct and help veteran Detective Hoffman (Costas Mandylor) sift
through the latest grisly game of victims and piece together the
puzzle. When SWAT Commander Rigg (Lyriq Bent), the only local
officer who has yet to experience Jigsaw’s (Tobin Bell) handiwork,
is suddenly abducted, he has just 90 minutes to overcome a diabolical
series of interconnected traps...or face the deadly consequences.
The genesis of Jigsaw’s evil is revealed, exposing the puppet
master’s true intentions and the sinister plan for his past,
present and future victims.
