I've got a surprising little gem of a
film to tell you about tonight and I doubt most of you have even
heard of its existence. It is titled FRANKENSTEIN VS. THE CREATURE
FROM BLOOD COVE and it is a wonderful throwback to the films of my
youth.
Directed by starring and produced by
William Winckler FVTCFBC is a wonderful homage to the horror films of
the 30's through the 50's just chock full of brilliant witty dialog
and filmed in glorious black and white. There are some scenes int
his film that you would swear was stock footage from back in the day.
Especially the underwater scenes with the Creature. It really looks
like lost scenes from Creature From The Black Lagoon.
First off lets discuss the story. It
is your basic Universal Classic fair. Mad scientist creates horrible
creature that escapes and wreaks havoc. We get a FRANKENSTEIN
monster, a CREATURE monster and we also get a BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN
and a WOLF MAN which actually turns out to be Butch Patrick from THE
MUNSTERS. This film is actually chock full of cameo's. You've
really got to keep you eyes open. I noticed Lloyd Kaufman, Rosanne
Barr, Ron Jeremy and of course Butch Patrick and I have feeling there
are even more that I just didn't pick up on.
Anyway, back to story. It revolves
around the scientist who releases by accident the CREATURE who makes
it to the ocean and decides to go on a bit of a killing spree. To
combat the CREATURE our scientist builds himself a MONSTER based on
the notes of DR. FRANKENSTEIN and takes him to the beach to search
out and destroy the CREATURE. Of course what ensues is lots of
monster battling goodness.
One thing that this film features that
the old Universal films never had is lots of hot chicks and nudity.
We see lots and lots of boobies, real nice boobies. We even get a
strip bar scene that shows some full frontal. Very nice.
Winckler seems to find just about any
reason he can to get women out of there clothes and it just adds to
the fun. Just keep that in mind before you pop this one into the DVD
player with the kids around.
The FX in this film are top notch. It
appears as if everything in this film is a practical effect. The
CREATURE is one of the old fashion man in a suit effects and
all the rest appear to be very well done prosthetics. The BRIDE OF
FRANKENSTEIN is particularly effective. A wealth of talent worked on
this film and it really comes through on the screen.
The special features on this disc are
also fantastic. We get a full length commentary a very well done
making of documentary, a blooper reel that is freakin hilarious
and a really great short scene where FRANKENSTEIN gets a lap dance.
Great stuff.
Just chock full of monster goodness.
And I have got to tell you about the
music. It is as great as the rest of the project and melds perfectly
with the look and feel of the film. It has been a while since I have
listened to a soundtrack that does such a fine job of highlighting
the action and sets the mood for the entire running time of the film.
An exceptional job.
This is one that if you are a fan of
old school classic horror you must, must, must get your hands on.

We are in the process of gathering some
interviews from the principals on the project so keep it here for
much more coverage.
Enjoy the pictures below in the
meantime.
