It seems rather unfair but it is hard to not compare films like NIGHT OF THE LIVING DORKS with it’s incredible predecessor SHAUN OF THE DEAD. The quiet little foreign film made by obvious fans of the genre that gains critical acclaim from the fans via the convention screenings and word of mouth becomes a legend before it ever sees a wide release.
SOTD was the first and NIGHT OF THE LIVING DORKS follows the same game plan.
Problem for me with DORKS is that a lot of the humor and references that just lead nowhere.
DORKS is one of those films that you are either going to love and embrace or watch once and forget about. It is a film that has garnered high praise from many but for this reviewer, I’m afraid I’ll have to pass.
I viewed the English dubbed version and found the dubbing to be quite annoying with the voices just being way off for the appearance of the characters, you’ll know what I’m talking about if you find this as annoying as I did. If not, then you’ll just think I’m nuts.
The story line itself kind of plays out like a Cheech and Chong film with the drug, sex and high school life references flying at you from left and right. Problem is, they are just pretty much rehashed from previous films and when delivered with those annoying over dubbed voices, it just falls way short of any mark you could set.
The story line is pretty much as follows:
Three high school losers crash their van when a bong explodes and find themselves turned into flesh eating zombies afer inhaling some ashes bought off EBAY that can raise the dead.
The zombie fun and madness ensues.
That’s pretty much the whole film in about 40 words or so. The film does have a few “chuckle” moments and for what it is, it isn’t a bad film. I’m wondering what others have found to be just so damn great about this film.
This release from Anchor Bay is the first North American release of the film and as is always the case they have done an excellent job on the disc, here are the disc specs:
DVD Features:
* Available Subtitles: English * Available Audio Tracks: German (Dolby Digital 5.1), English (Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo) * Behind-the-scenes * Deleted and extended scenes * Fun scenes * Trailer
I can’t stress enough that this is a film that you really need to pick up and check out for yourself, it didn’t appeal to me but a lot of folks love it.
You need to give it a spin and see what you think.
