SPOILERS. PROCEED WITH CAUTION!
George Washington was a cannibal and liked to eat children. Such is the premise for this weeks Masters of Horror which airs Friday night at 10 pm on Showtime. I have to admit to you, when I heard of this storyline I was like, what the hell?
This years season of MOH has been nothing short of incredible and this weeks episode titled THE WASHINGTONIANS holds the line and quite possibly raises the bar a bit for future episodes. THE WASHINGTONIANS is a strange little tale of murder, cannibalism, government cover up and yes, horror.
It seems that our countries founding father developed a taste for human flesh while surviving through that horrible winter at Valley Forge. Through just plain desperation and will to live things turned to cannibalism that winter and when everything was said and done our first president just found out that he liked the flavor and continued the disgusting practice.
We are ushered into the story as a man and his young family return to his hometown to bury and take care of the personal business for his recently deceased grandmother. The first sign that anything is wrong comes at the funeral when all the locals show up to pay their respects and lets just say that they are a colorful group of people. Things seems to be moving along pretty normally though until while cleaning out the house they come across a portrait of George Washington in the basement. Hidden behind the picture, in the frame they discover a fork that appears to be crafted out of bone and a hand written letter that seems to have been written by GW himself in which he confesses his taste for flesh, young flesh.
Thinking it a bit of a joke but realizing that the letter my had in fact been written by George Washington himself the father starts looking into finding out if the letter may be worth some money and what he should do with it.
That is when THE WASHINGTONIANS visit.
Arriving on horse back and wearing the attire of the day THE WASHINGTONIANS want the letter, the fork and oh yeah, the mans young daughter. Seems she might be tasty.
Things take a gruesome turn and I do mean quickly as the strange storyline unfolds and ultimately ends at a cannibal dinner party that you will not soon forget.
Director Peter Medak handles the directing duties on this one and does a stellar job. This story could have easily slipped into the silly category but Medak handles the material with care and keeps the shocks and scares wonderfully paced.
As has always been the case with all MOH episodes the FX have been handled by Nicotero and Berger and are amazing.
If youre not going to be home on Friday night to catch this one you may want to set your DVR. This is one youre not going to want to miss. One of the finest hours of horror programming to grace the screen.
