Those of you that checked out ABOMINABLE when it aired on
Sci-Fi Channel need to pick up this DVD and watch it again. It really is a different experience unedited
and without those pesky commercials.
Director Ryan Schifrin has crafted a fun, creepy monster
flick that intertwines elements of those 70’s Bigfoot films some of us
remember, Hitchcock’s Rear Window and the good old fashioned 80’s slasher
film. An interesting mix but it works
and it works well.
Mild spoilers ahead.
The film does have some genre names starring ( Lance Henriksen,
Jeffery Combs and Dee Wallace Stone ) but these folks are pretty much just
elongated cameos. The real star of the film is a name you may not know but a
face you will all remember. Matt McCoy
is the name and he turns in a great performance as Preston Rodgers a man
returning to the scene of an accident that has left him in a wheel chair. In a ritzy cabin nestled up next to a
mountain Preston attempts to confront his
demons and get his life back in order.
Just across the lane a car load of college kids show up to spend the
weekend in the adjoining cabin. After
some strange noises and stomping sounds from the woods peaks his interest he
begins to keep an eye on the girls by looking through binoculars from an
elevated patio. After a short while the girls
notice his “peeking” and label him a Peeping Tom. Kind of creeped out by him but not really intimidated
the girls just kind of ignore him and dismiss him with cat calls of “Creep” and
“Perv”.
One by one the girls start disappearing with Rodgers
watching the big hairy beast do his work unable to leave his cabin because of
stairs and his handicap. Through a
series of increasingly violent episodes Rodgers and one of the girls end up in
a life or death battle with the big smelly hairball.
The film has a great pace and the “guest stars” show up at
just the right points to help move the story along. All in all ABOMINABLE works. I jumped a few times and found myself fully
entertained by the action on screen.
As always Anchor
Bay once again puts
together a great package for fans. Here
is the official synopsis for the film followed by the disc special features and
such:
Featuring Uncensored Footage Not Seen In The Sci Fi Channel
Broadcast!
It has been sighted 42,000 times in 68 countries, a vicious
creature of myth and legend called Sasquatch, Yeti, and perhaps most
infamously, Bigfoot. We’ve hunted it for years. But what happens when it
decides to hunt us? For newly paraplegic mountain climber Preston Rogers (Matt
McCoy), the horror hits home when this ravenous beast attacks a remote forest
community. Will its next hot meal be a group of knucklehead hunters (including
Lance Henriksen of ALIENS & Jeffrey Combs of RE-ANIMATOR), a skeptical
police chief (Paul Gleason of DIE HARD), a cabin full of nubile co-eds
(including Ashley Hartman of THE O.C.), or a trapped Preston
himself? Rex Linn (CSI: MIAMI)
and Dee Wallace-Stone (CUJO) co-star in this wild and gruesome horror shocker
that Fangoria calls “the best serious fright film ever made about Bigfoot!”
