The PG-13-rated DISTURBIA, the tale of a young man under house arrest whose next-door neighbor may be a serial killer, scared up just over $23 million this weekend, proving once again that young adults are always up for a good scare. The Paramount/Dreamworks film stars Shia LaBeouf, who has just been cast in the fourth Indiana Jones film, as well as Sarah Roemer of THE GRUDGE 2, and Carrie-Anne Moss of the MATRIX films.
It was surprising to see the much-touted GRINDHOUSE slip so far down to 10th place given all the press and word-of-mouth and people involved. There are rumors that the producers of that film are thinking of releasing DEATH PROOF and PLANET TERROR (the two separate films that comprise GRINDHOUSE) as fuller, separate films. I would be interested to see alternate cuts of these movies, as anything by Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez are always entertaining.
In the meantime, if DISTURBIA continues to rack in the dough, you can bet that there will be a follow-up.
